Accepted stop-loss and take-profit instructions are different. MetaQuotes documents these as server-side functions in MT5. The built-in trailing stop runs in the terminal: if the platform closes, it stops sending further stop-level changes. An existing server-side stop remains at its last accepted level. An SLA defines its own measurement scope and remedies. How to Test the Route to Your Trading Server
Ask the broker or prop firm for the appropriate trading-server hostname or diagnostic endpoint. Its public website may use entirely different infrastructure. Test from the VPS itself; a test from your laptop measures another route.
In Windows PowerShell, replace broker.example.com with that confirmed hostname before running these commands. The example hostname is a placeholder, not a real broker or a test result.

Microsoft documents Test-Connection as an ICMP echo test. It helps inspect reachability and round-trip responses, not order execution. The tracert documentation also explains that some routers do not respond, producing asterisks. A missing response alone does not establish that the trading service is down.
Repeat the checks at different times, including the sessions when your software will run. Record the VPS region, destination, time zone, sample count, response variation and timeouts. Investigate repeated failures with the provider or broker and compare them with terminal connection logs.
There is no universal ping cutoff that proves a VPS is suitable. Compare consistent measurements to the same destination, then test your actual software in an appropriate demo or test environment. Keep network response time separate from broker processing, platform delays and any simulated execution rules. Do not report a ping result as a measured improvement in fills.
Match the VPS to Your Trading Strategy
Translate your setup into an operating requirement: which programs run, when they are busiest, and how long they may be unattended. This is more useful for hosting selection than a general label such as “scalper” or “swing trader.”
One terminal with an EA
Test the terminal with its normal charts, indicators and permissions. Confirm that the EA is actually active and that its journal shows no connection or licence errors. Then disconnect Remote Desktop and reconnect to verify that the same session and terminal remain available.
Several terminals or a trade copier
Measure the combined workload, including bursts when several terminals process updates together. Record each terminal’s account and configuration so a restart does not launch the wrong setup. Use a copier only where the account’s rules permit it, and test that reconnecting does not start duplicate instances.
Unattended operation
Disconnecting RDP and signing out are different actions. Microsoft explains that disconnected sessions can keep programs active, but configured session limits can end them later. Check the actual server policy instead of assuming that closing the window guarantees indefinite operation.
A reboot also needs its own recovery test. During a planned test window, verify how the terminal is restarted, how it reconnects and how you confirm its automation state. Check Your Prop Firm’s Current Rules
VPS access, automated trading and account sharing are separate permissions. A permitted VPS location does not automatically authorize an EA, copier or third-party account manager. Read the rules for your exact firm, programme and platform before connecting an account.
As a concrete example, FTMO’s VPS FAQ, checked on 16 September 2026, generally permits VPS use but tells VPS users to avoid US geolocation when using MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView. That is one firm’s policy, not an industry-wide rule or approval for a particular server.
